Hellfire Pass & Memorial Walking Trail
Tha Sao Sub-district, Sai Yok District, Kanchanaburi
Tracing the Shadows of WWII: The Deepest Cutting of the Death Railway Take a profound journey back in time to Hellfire Pass, historically known as “Chong Khao Khat.” This dramatic rock cutting is the largest and most infamous section of the wartime Thailand-Burma Railway, constructed by Allied prisoners of war (POWs) and Asian laborers under the Imperial Japanese Army during World War II. Built as a strategic supply route to invade India, constructing this railway through rugged mountains, steep cliffs, and treacherous ravines led to an unimaginable loss of human life.
The chilling name “Hellfire Pass” was coined by the prisoners themselves. Forced to labor around the clock for 18 hours a day, the men worked deep into the night under the flickering glow of torches, oil lamps, and bonfires. The firelight cast eerie, dancing shadows of skeletal, emaciated prisoners against the high rock walls—a haunting scene that looked like a living image of hell.
Recommended Activities
- Visit the Hellfire Pass Interpretive Centre: Begin your visit at the world-class museum, built through a joint collaboration between the Australian and Royal Thai Governments. The centre houses a powerful collection of authentic wartime artifacts, moving historical photographs, and personal items. Do not miss the mini-theater, which screens a brief, poignant documentary featuring real black-and-white archival footage from the railway’s construction.
- Walk the Historic Railway Cutting: Walk down into the actual 17-meter-wide mountain cutting carved entirely by human hand. As you trace the path, you can still see the original drill marks in the rock faces and remnants of the railway bed. The serene jungle atmosphere today stands in powerful contrast to the intense suffering once endured within these walls.

Located just below the centre is Hellfire Pass. The round-trip walk takes about 40 to 50 minutes.

Walking Trail Options
The memorial walking trail is split into two main routes. An audio guide (available at the centre) is highly recommended for both:
- Route 1: The Main Pass (Recommended for most visitors)
- Distance: Takes about 50 minutes round-trip.
- Experience: An easy-to-moderate walk down a set of stairs leading directly into the main Hellfire Pass cutting and the memorial site.
- Route 2: The Extended Memorial Trail
- Distance: Takes about 3 to 4 hours round-trip.
- Experience: This longer trek follows the former railway track further into the jungle. It is physically demanding, featuring uneven terrain and steep declines. Excellent physical fitness, proper trekking shoes, and plenty of drinking water are highly required.
