Kanchanaburi City Pillar Shrine
Mueang District, Kanchanaburi

The Sacred Heart of the City and Guardian Spirit of Kanchanaburi Situated in the very center of the city, the Kanchanaburi City Pillar Shrine is the most revered spiritual landmark for local residents. According to ancient Thai traditions, whenever a new city is established, a “City Pillar” (Sao Lak Mueang) is erected in a sacred ceremony. This pillar acts as an auspicious foundation, a spiritual center, and the dwelling place of the city’s guardian deities who protect the land and its people, ensuring peace and prosperity.
History and Sacred Architecture
The current shrine was constructed in 1960, replacing an older, deteriorating structure built during the reign of Phraya Prasitti Songkhram (Ramphakdi Sriwiset), the second governor of Kanchanaburi.
The shrine features an elegant Chaturamuk (four-sided) pavilion topped with a classic Thai-style tiered roof. The entire building is intentionally oriented to face the famous confluence where the Kwai Noi and Kwai Yai rivers meet. Inside houses the sacred city pillar, a beautifully crafted wooden post with a traditional lotus-bud top (Hua Met Song Man). Displayed at the front are historic stone tablets and inscribed teakwood planks that officially record the exact date, month, and year of the city’s founding.

Living Traditions and Cultural Quirks
The City Pillar Shrine is deeply woven into the daily lives of Kanchanaburi’s people. Local families consistently visit the shrine to pray and “inform” the city’s guardian spirit during major life milestones, such as ordinations, weddings, and traditional newborn hair-cutting ceremonies.
Travelers’ Note: When traveling through this area, you will notice a fascinating local custom: almost every passing car and motorbike will honk their horn. This is not out of frustration, but rather a short honk as a sign of respect to the guardian deity. Furthermore, the Kanchanaburi Town Municipality hosts a grand annual festival to pay homage to the shrine every May (specifically on the 6th waxing moon of the 6th lunar month).
Beliefs and Blessings: What to Pray For
Thai people traditionally visit City Pillar Shrines to seek specific blessings for their lives. International visitors are welcome to join and pray for:
- Stability in Life: The word Lak means “foundation” or “pillar,” so praying here is believed to help you firmly “set up your roots,” ensuring a smooth, stable life free of obstacles.
- Career Advancement: Seeking blessings for professional growth, promotions, and success in business.
- Safety and Protection: Praying for safe travels and protection from harms during journeys.
