The Definitive History Behind the Infamous Death Railway Located right next to the Kanchanaburi War Cemetery (Don-Rak), the Thailand-Burma Railway Centre (TBRC) is an interactive museum and research center dedicated to preserving the history of the infamous Death Railway.
This world-class exhibition offers a deeply moving and comprehensive look into the entire timeline of the railway—which stretched from Nong Pladuk Junction in Ratchaburi, Thailand, all the way to Thanbyuzayat in Burma (Myanmar).
Inside, you will explore detailed exhibits covering:
- The invasion and military strategy of the Japanese Imperial Army.
- The complex engineering, planning, and design of the railway.
- The challenging and rugged geography the workers had to conquer.
- The harsh, daily realities of life and survival inside the prisoner-of-war (POW) camps.
- Wartime medical conditions, treatments, and makeshift hospitals.
- Allied bombing raids, the destruction of the railway, and the ultimate aftermath of World War II.
Selected images displayed with permission. A wealth of detailed information and exhibits awaits you inside.

“Just before noon, two men went down with malaria. As the group leader, I managed to let them rest. During the lunch break, two more fell severely ill with acute stomach pain. I was certain one of them had cholera; he couldn’t even walk. After a heated argument, the Japanese Corporal finally allowed them to return to the camp.
I tried to help them by having the malaria patients stand on either side, supporting the cholera patient in the middle with his arms draped over their necks. They looked like a staggered, three-legged entity. I watched him stumble along, his head rolling, drenched in sweat from the agonizing pain, desperately fighting not to collapse.
The cholera victim hung limply between his two supporters, his head dropped onto his chest like he was crucified. Lacking any strength in his knees and feet, his two staggering companions slowly dragged him along the path, his torn trousers and loincloth slipping down to his knees.”
