Tham Krasae Cave

Sai Yok District, Kanchanaburi

.

A Historic WWII Sanctuary Along the Most Dramatic Section of the Death Railway Tham Krasae Cave is an absolute must-visit, world-famous landmark in Kanchanaburi. This naturally formed cave is deeply intertwined with World War II history, having once served as a campsite and shelter for Allied prisoners of war (POWs) during the grueling construction of the infamous Thailand-Burma Death Railway.

The cave sits directly alongside the active Kanchanaburi–Nam Tok railway line. Inside, the cavern is remarkably airy, spacious, and houses a highly revered, sacred Buddha image where visitors can pay their respects. Stepping out to the cave’s entrance rewards you with a breathtaking panoramic view of the wooden railway trestles hugging the cliffside, with the scenic Kwai Noi River winding directly below. This specific cliffside curve is historically documented as the most difficult and dangerous section of the entire railway to construct.
