The Historic Thai Paper Mill, Kanchanaburi
Mueang District, Kanchanaburi

A Living Monument of World War II Era Industrial Architecture Step back into the pre-World War II era at the Thai Paper Mill Kanchanaburi. Opened in 1938—just three years before Thailand officially entered World War II in 1941 (during the reign of King Rama VIII)—this site stands as the second paper factory ever built in Thailand, following the first mill established in Samsen, Bangkok, in 1923.
In its glory days, this state-of-the-art facility symbolized Kanchanaburi’s transition from a traditional agricultural society into a modern industrial town. It wasn’t just a workplace, but a thriving community hub that deeply influenced local social life during the mid-20th century.
The Architecture
The reinforced concrete complex features early Thai Modernist Architecture, heavily inspired by European industrial design of the pre-World War II period. The layout of the mill includes several remarkably preserved structures:
- The Main Factory Building
- The Pulp Production Plant
- The Chlorine Processing House
- Supporting Facilities (such as staff quarters and the community clubhouse)
