Wat Ban Tham
Tha Muang District, Kanchanaburi
The Historic Cave Temple, Dragon’s Mouth Staircase & Legends of Khun Phaen Situated along the banks of the Mae Klong River with a mountain backdrop, Wat Ban Tham is an ancient temple dating back to the Sukhothai period. This temple is famous worldwide for its iconic and visually stunning staircase: a 269-step climb that leads you directly through the gaping mouth of a giant dragon and up into a network of mystical caves hidden within the 200-meter-high mountain.
For adventure seekers and history buffs, Wat Ban Tham offers an incredible journey. The mountain consists of multiple connected peaks holding numerous caves filled with glittering stalactites, ancient Buddha statues, and deep ties to Thai folklore—specifically the legendary epic of Khun Chang Khun Phaen. Exploring every cave here can easily fill an entire day!

✨ Main Attractions Inside the Temple Grounds
- The Old Ordination Hall (Ubosot): Located at the base, this historic hall houses an ancient, sacred Buddha image in the meditation posture, flanked by his chief disciples, Sariputta and Moggallana. These original statues are crafted from sandstone, covered in black lacquer, and adorned with gold leaf.
- The New Ordination Hall: A beautifully constructed modern hall housing a majestic replica of the famous Phra Phuttha Chinnarat.
- Wat Ban Tham Museum: A small on-site museum displaying a collection of antique chinaware, pottery, and ancient Buddha images that were safely relocated from the upper mountain caves.
🧗 The Caves of Wat Ban Tham (From Low to High Peak)
1. Kuha Mangkon Sawan Cave (The Heaven’s Dragon Cave / Nang Bua Khli Cave)
Located at the top of the dragon staircase, this main cavern enshrines “Luang Pho Yai Chinnarat” (or Luang Pho Yai), a colossal Sukhothai-style Buddha statue in the Subduing Mara posture, measuring over 4 meters wide.
Myth & Mystery: Behind the giant Buddha lies a mysterious stone crevice. Local legends say this sealed tunnel once connected to a mythical underwater underworld. To the right of the Buddha, a natural stalactite formation resembles a long-haired woman; this is the shrine of Mae Bua Khli, a famous character from Thai literature (the wife of Khun Phaen) whose spirit is believed to guard the cave.
2. Man Wichit Cave (The Magnificent Curtain Cave)
Located just above the main cave, a winding path leads to this cavern discovered in 1978. Inside, you will find spectacular stalactites and stalagmites shaped like grand theatrical stage curtains. (Electricity/lighting available).
3. Khun Phaen Cave
Accessible via a left fork right before reaching Man Wichit Cave, this historic cavern is deeply linked to the legendary warrior Khun Phaen. Discovered in late 1978, it is fully equipped with walking lights.
4. Dok Chok Cave
For the more adventurous, a 30-minute trek across the mountain ridge from Man Wichit Cave leads into a hidden valley where this cave rests. It features a wild, intricate maze of hanging rock formations. (Note: No electricity; flashlights required).
5. Dusit Cave Park (The Grand Cavern)
The largest and most visually stunning cave in the entire mountain range, featuring 5 distinct chambers. It is located a short distance past Dok Chok Cave. (Note: No electricity; highly recommended to ask a temple guide to lead the way, and remember to bring flashlights, candles, and drinking water).
6. Muen Han Cave & Nang Nual Cave
Two easily accessible, lower-level caves located directly behind the new ordination hall. Muen Han Cave is named after the historic bandit chief (the father of Nang Bua Khli), while Nang Nual Cave features beautiful flower-shaped rock formations. (Electricity available).
7. Nang Non Cave
Discovered in 1979, this is a lower-level cave that is relatively easy to access without climbing too high, showcasing pristine, younger stalactites.
