A Majestic Khmer-Style Sandstone Castle Nestled in a Sacred Cavern Situated amidst a serene landscape of lush forests and rolling mountains in Nong Ya sub-district, Wat Tham Phu Wa is one of Kanchanaburi’s most visually striking and unique temples. Operating as a branch of the revered Wat Paknam, this temple seamlessly blends magnificent art with natural wonders.

The first thing that will capture your breath is the monumental, reddish-brown sandstone castle standing proudly at the cave’s entrance. This structure features an exquisite contemporary design inspired by ancient Khmer architecture, adorned with incredibly detailed and intricate carvings.

The Hidden Cavern & Sacred Relics

Stepping through the castle’s grand entrance leads you into a massive, cavernous hall. Inside, the ceiling is decorated with naturally formed stalactites and stalagmites.

Originally, this naturally hollow cave served directly as the temple’s main ordination hall (Ubosot). Today, a magnificent Buddha image in a meditating posture sits enshrined as the principal icon, surrounded by the peaceful ambiance of the cave. Visitors can also pay respects to a highly revered Supreme Buddha Relic (Praborom Saririkathat) which was sacredly invited from Myanmar. To preserve this unique sanctuary, a grand renovation was undertaken, resulting in the beautiful sandstone castle being built directly over the cave entrance.

Beyond its appeal as a tourist landmark, Wat Tham Phu Wa is an ideal destination for spiritual retreats, dhamma practices, and large group functions. The temple grounds are fully equipped to accommodate and host up to 500 guests, offering:
